Building a Foundation

The first phase, Building a Foundation, includes the initial consultation, completing intake forms, getting to know one another, and an assessment of a person's readiness for counselling, as well as the client's instinctual confidence in the therapist. While this phase can consist of four or more sessions, although usually two or three sessions consisting of one hour each are sufficient to begin a solid foundation of trust and confidence to develop between the client and the psychotherapist.

Several research studies have produced very strong evidence that the single most important factor in a person's ability to feel success and gain empowerment in their therapeutic journey is their relationship with their psychotherapist. Due to this fact, I take as much time as the client needs during this phase prior to moving on and beginning the work that is needed in the next three phases.
